For more than three decades, Rodney Mathsen has been dedicated to protecting the families, farms, and businesses that make his community strong. Today, that legacy continues as he works alongside his son, Josh, combining generations of agricultural knowledge, community service, and insurance expertise to help clients prepare for whatever the future may bring.

Rooted in Agriculture

Rodney’s connection to agriculture began long before his insurance career. Raised on a family dairy and crop farm, he developed a deep appreciation for the hard work and resilience of farm families. That same family farm still stands today, serving as a reminder of the values that shaped his life and career.

After earning a degree in Agronomy from North Dakota State University, Rodney worked as a crop consultant, and later as a fertilizer and chemical applicator for the local co-op. In 1990, he was approached by Farmers Union Agency about becoming an insurance agent, an opportunity that allowed him to continue serving the agricultural community in a new way.

More Than Insurance

For Rodney, insurance has never simply been about policies and paperwork. It’s about helping neighbors through some of life’s most difficult moments. Many of his clients have become like family over the years, and he takes pride in helping them remain optimistic during challenging times while protecting everything they’ve worked so hard to build.

One experience that has stayed with him occurred when a longtime farm client suffered a devastating fire loss and called Rodney at 1:00 a.m. Without hesitation, he answered the phone and immediately began helping the family navigate the claims process. Thanks to the coverage they had in place, the farm fully recovered, a reminder of why his work matters every single day.

Continuing the Family Tradition

Josh Mathsen grew up watching his father serve the community and knew from an early age that he wanted to continue that tradition. Before entering the insurance industry, Josh worked in sales of farm equipment to agribusinesses. While he enjoyed helping producers invest in their operations, he realized he could make an even greater impact by helping farmers protect everything they’ve built.

Joining Farmers Union Agency gave Josh the opportunity to work alongside his father while preparing to one day carry on the family business when Rodney retires. Together, they share a passion for helping families and businesses stay secure through every stage of life.

Dedicated to Their Community

The Mathsen family believes that serving others extends far beyond the office. Both Rodney and Josh are active members of their local church and are deeply involved in their community.

Josh also serves in several important leadership roles, including:

• Volunteer firefighter
• Running for County commissioner
• Chairman of Inspire, formerly known as the Developmental Activities Center, a day program serving individuals with disabilities

Their commitment to service reflects the same values they bring to every client relationship, which are integrity, compassion, and a genuine desire to help others succeed.

Family First

Family has always been at the heart of the Mathsen family’s success. Rodney and his wife, Grace, have been married for fortytwo years. Grace has played an important role in the agency as a Customer Service Representative, while together they have raised six children and now enjoy the blessings of twenty-one grandchildren.

Josh and his wife, Michelle, are also proud parents of two children and are continuing the family’s tradition of faith, service, and community involvement.
